Technical Requirements

Server

  • O/S: Windows Server 2000 (Service Pack 4 or higher) or Windows Server 2003 recommended for optimal multi-user performance. Windows 2000 Pro (Service Pack 4 or higher), Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 2 or higher) or Windows Vista (excluding Windows Vista Home Basic) are acceptable for stand-alone or a small multi-user configuration. At this time we do not run on any 64-bit O/S.
  • IIS: Internet Information Services must be added as a Windows component. Port 80 must be open. A number of virtual directories will be created including GSWebService, GSReportingWS, GSSecurityService, & GSImportExportService. These virtual directories require ASP.NET version 2.0 and anonymous access enabled in Directory Security. WebServices are hosted in these virtual directories. The workstations communicate to the webService methods via XML over TCP/IP.
  • SQL: SQL Server 2005 Express is installed with a named instance of "GSelector" if SQL Server 2005 is not present. Microsoft has limitations on Express including support for only 1 CPU, a 1 GB RAM memory limit for the buffer pool, and a 4 GB database size. The user can purchase/install the full SQL Server 2005 at their discretion. If more than one SQL Server 2005 named instance is installed, a list of instances to choose from will be presented during the install. Note that the TCP/IP protocol and mixed mode (Windows and SQL) authentication must be enabled. A number of SQL users will be created including gs_user, gs_sa, and GSelectorSQLAdmin. SQL Browser listens on UDP port 1434 so this port must be open. GS 3.0 and higher does NOT run on MSDE or SQL Server 2000.
  • Processor: 2.4 GHz or faster recommended
  • RAM: 1 GB or higher recommended
  • Disk space: 50 MB - 2 GB (depending on the number of songs, links, and most importantly, the size of the schedule history window)
  • .NET Framework: 2.0 will be installed if not already present
  • NOTE:
    • For larger operations, the database (SQL Server) and web servers (IIS) can be on separate machines.
    • In a multi-station database, you can use multiple web servers pointing to a single database server. Each station in a multi-station database can be assigned to a different web server. All scheduling and testing is done on the web server.
    • On the database server, you can install multiple GSelector SQL databases in one or more SQL named instances.

Workstation

  • O/S: Windows 2000 Pro (Service Pack 4 or higher), XP Pro/Home (Service Pack 2 or higher) or Windows Vista. At this time we do not run on any 64-bit O/S.
  • Windows Media Player: Requires version 9 or higher. If not present during the install there is a prompt to install it.
  • Processor: 1.8 GHz or faster recommended
  • RAM: 1 GB or higher recommended
  • Disk space: ~100 MB
  • Connectivity: Must be able to access the webServices running in the virtual directories on the server (web server if separate). This may require a VPN connection from outside the station. A broadband connection is recommended.
  • .NET Framework: 2.0 will be installed if not already present

Stand-Alone

  • Must meet both the Server and Workstation requirements with the following exception:
    • If IIS is not installed, a personal web service (Cassini) will be installed and it will run on port 8787. There is a single GSelectorWebServices folder instead of the multiple virtual directories under IIS. XP Home does not include IIS, so the personal web service will be installed for this operating system. No other workstations will be able to access this personal web service.

These are minimum requirements, so feel free to exceed them. Get as much power and free space as you can. For Internet connectivity and servers, RCS supports a Microsoft® network using TCP/IP using a brand name, server quality computer.
