What is RCSnews?

A comprehensive, standalone newsroom software system, RCSnews enables reporters to write newscasts, receive and revise wire copy and digitally record, edit and play back audio.

Designed for use in the newsroom, in the on-air studio and in the field, RCSnews is completely scalable to fulfill your newsroom requirements regardless of size. This can include an enterprise-wide deployment, a server-based system serving all reporters simultaneously, or just a simple standalone system for a single user.

Whether you're writing your own newscasts for top-of-the-hour broadcast or stacking stories and audio for your show, RCSnews has the flexibility to meet your needs.

What size news department is best for RCSnews software?

RCSnews is flexible enough to fit any size news department. RCSnews can be run on a single PC for a bureau office or small newsroom, or can scale up to a full server-based system serving large newsrooms.

What are the coolest new features you've added recently?

Brand new in RCSnews:

•  Teleprompter scrolling - See the story's text and audio playback based on each announcer's reading speed

•  Quick Record - for immediate recording of breaking news
•  Multi-lingual functionality - both English and Spanish are now supported
•  "Edit while recording" Audio Editor - Fully integrated into RCSnews, this new tool will allow editing of an audio file while recording is in progress, plus typical recording, editing and playback functionality.

How much time does RCSnews typically take to setup or install?

Loading the program (install time) for a stand-alone system takes about 10 minutes. For server-based systems, more time will be needed depending on the number of users.

Configuring the software (setup time) takes about an hour for a simple system, or about a day for a complex system with multiple users or stations and using many categories utilizing numerous libraries and wires.

How portable is RCSnews? Can our reporters and stringers use it in the field?

RCSnews will run extremely well with full functionality on any standard laptop or PC running Microsoft® Windows XP or 2000. It was specifically designed for field and on-location reporting scenarios as well as for intensive use in any newsroom operation. For more details, see the Technical Requirements page.

Do I have to be connected to the internet to use RCSnews?

No. However, some internal features like WAN transfer or FTP access will require an internet connection.

What type of internet connection do we need?

RCSnews uses standard TCP and UDP communication protocol.

We're currently using other newsroom software. Can we import our text and audio archives into RCSnews?

Yes, this can be accomplished quickly if the text files are separate from the audio and if the text files are in .txt format, typical in other systems.

Can I ingest wire services directly into RCSnews?

Yes - either as serial data or IP-delivered data which use typical ANPA-standard formats.

How can I organize my incoming wire services?

With RCSnews it's easy to organize all your wire feeds by creating custom categories and sub-categories. You control how long the wires stay in the database and the amount of time each category will display for the wires. You can also sort data by type (typically world, national, regional, local, business, features, sports, weather), or by headline or many other available criteria.

What's the maximum number of wire feeds RCSnews can accommodate?

Currently there is room for 100 serial feeds and an unlimited number of IP feeds.

What are the incoming feeds RCSnews most typically handles?

RCSnews can comfortably accommodate satellite and IP-delivered feeds from the Associated Press, ABC, CBS, plus numerous smaller and regional wire services.

Can we pre-record overnight network feeds for playback in another daypart?

Yes. RCSnews' automation feature lets you set up and execute time-based schedules for recording feeds directly into the system.

How many different news-related tasks can my writers be working on at once within RCSnews?

There is no limit in the software. You are limited only by the resources of your computer and the momentum of your News Director.

Will RCSnews integrate with my station's digital automation system?

Currently RCSnews has full integration with RCS Master Control automation as well as bi-directional communication with the RCS NexGen Digital automation system.

How about the word processing features inside RCSnews, for example, what are its spell checking capabilities?

There is a built-in Rich Text Format (RTF) editor in RCSnews, allowing basic font changes (bold, italic, underline, etc.), and type resizing. Spell checking is included.

What about multiple language support?

The RCSnews software is now available in both English and Spanish, with other languages planned for the future. If your language is not currently supported but you wish to order RCSnews, ask us to consider prioritizing a translation for your market. Bi-lingual writers can easily log off one language and onto the other.® operating system

Can the spell checker learn new words or add custom words?

Yes it can. Its dictionary is on your network drive so all users access the same dictionary. Thus, the spell checker can learn new words, just like any high-end word processor. Further, the dictionary can be regionalized. For example, if your Windows regional settings are set for Australia, RCSnews will use the Australian-English dictionary rather than, say, US English. Or, set to Spanish (Mexico), RCSnews will refer to the Mexican-Spanish dictionary.

Can I share my stories with other writers? How can I see what they are writing?

The system administrator's security settings determine if stories can be shared among writers. Opening the shared Story Library shows the last saved version of the copy, when it was last saved and the last writer to edit it.

Users can also e-mail stories to other users from within the program.

How close to air time can I make changes in my newscast?

Incredibly close. In fact, you can even make changes in upcoming stories of a newscast while it is in progress! This can be done by either the anchor in the studio or even by an editor or copywriter in the newsroom.

How does the auto-scroll teleprompter of RCSnews work?

The teleprompter scrolls the text of the story automatically, based on the reader's predetermined reading speed. They can customize their color and font preferences on the teleprompter screen. Actualities can be played directly from the teleprompter and to accommodate the reader the auto-scroll pauses, and begins again when the audio is finished.

In the teleprompter, how do we accommodate for variances in reading speeds from one announcer to another?

This easy-to-use feature adjusts and compensates for differences in read rates by various announcers, great for dual-anchored newscasts or when the sentences of one story alternate between anchors. The copywriter simply assigns a roll speed for each announcer's text.

Is there a fast way to start recording unexpected calls to/from newsmakers?

Yes. The Quick Record button will automatically launch your audio editor allowing you to immediately begin recording to a pre-determined location in the system.

Can RCSnews edit audio?

RCSnews not only includes a sophisticated editor of its own, but it integrates with most third party audio editors - either choice offering easy audio editing from within the application.

We are comfortable with our existing audio editor. Can we continue to use it with RCSnews?

As long as your audio editor can accept typical command line parameters recognized by most systems, then RCSnews will work with it.

How large can my media library be?

As large as the available hard drive space on your computer or server.

What are the media formats supported by RCSnews?

Audio saved as MP2, MP3 or WAV (Linear PCM) files can all be imported directly into RCSnews, and exported as any of these file types as well.

Our all-news station posts stories on our Web site. Can this be handled by RCSnews?

Yes. RCSnews makes Web publishing of news stories fast and easy. The audio can be pushed in any of a number of popular formats and the text via RTF (Rich Text Format). An XML file is created for easy parsing and data management on your Web site.

Can RCSnews receive automatic news alerts?

If the news alerts are delivered via Serial or IP data then RCSnews receives them automatically.

How are writers and producers notified of breaking news stories?

In RCSnews, alerts scroll messages across the bottom of the screen. Breaking news alerts can also be configured via the supported hardware to set off any external alarms.

How are story archives organized and where are they located?

You can organize archives in the Story Library, or back up to another location like a local folder, mapped drive, or removable media for easy retrieval later.

Can the entire RCSnews system be backed up and later restored?

Yes - all of the text data within the system can be backed up from inside RCSnews. Audio files should be backed up separately using any storage configuration.

In case of power outages, what happens to the stories my reporters are working on?

When power is restored, the Auto-Save function of RCSnews allows your reporters to navigate back to the Story Library to retrieve their work.

Is RCSnews suitable for long-form, feature-length news programs?

Yes. The Rundown function in RCSnews lets you build full feature-length news programs using either the story screen or the teleprompter.

What are the minimum hardware specs for a desktop PC or laptop to run RCSnews?

See our Technical Requirements page.
